Our overseeding service:
We select a premium quality seed type that will blend in with your existing lawn for the required results. This is where overseeding a wider area will give a more consistent colour and appearance, compared to small patch repairs. If we overseed as part of a lawn renovation, we usually will do so after aerating as that process opens up 100’s if not 1000’s of small holes or slits in the soil to act as a good seedbed. Similarly, after scarifying is good too as it will create small grooves in the soil, acting as a seedbed too. We will also overseed smaller areas where specific sections are damaged and need the soil preparing then seed added. We will usually add a pre-seed fertiliser to aid the root establishment. To best ensure soil contact for the seed, we would always recommend having top dressing applied afterwards as it will give better and more consistent results.
When can we overseed?
Spring and Autumn with the soil temperature are 8oC or higher, along with wet, warm weather to get the seed to germinate and establish. In ideal conditions, the seed will germinate and produce a small green shoot in just over a week for rye grasses, fescue grass 2-3 week. However, seasonal weather and lawn variations, rainfall/watering can affect the timescales.
Lawn recovery after overseeding?
We advise to keep off the overseeded areas as much as possible until the grass has established this can be up to 2 months. Typically, that means to stay off for the first 2-4 weeks when the seed is germinating, and young shoots are very fragile. After 4 weeks in normal conditions, the grass should have established well and may also need a high cut. Water the lawn daily for the first 2-3 weeks and weekly afterwards to ensure the soil does not dry out.
